A superfood is a nutrient-dense food that is considered beneficial for your overall health. A well-crafted superfoods list can help reshape your diet and provide antioxidant-rich foods, omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods, and so much more. Fortunately for our health, there are loads of superfoods out there, so we have compiled a superfoods list with some of our favorites that both taste great and benefit your health.
Our Superfoods List
Although this is far from exhaustive, here are a few of our top superfoods!
Black beans are legumes you can find in just about any grocery store which is why they are first on our superfoods list. Black beans contain iron, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, and zinc. This combination of nutrients helps bones and joints maintain their strength. Furthermore, black beans contain selenium, which is a mineral most fruits and vegetables don’t even have. Selenium is needed to produce the body’s “master” antioxidant, glutathione, and eating foods high in selenium can help detoxify the body. Black beans are tasty and can be thrown together with rice, on a salad, or even alone as a side dish, among other delicious recipe ideas.
Goji berries, aka wolfberries, are native to China. Goji berries have all 8 essential amino acids, which makes them a complete protein. Goji berries also have lots of antioxidants, and a Chinese study concluded they might help fight off cancer tumors. Other recent studies have indicated regular consumption of goji berries can help improve your energy levels, ability to focus, and ability to sleep well.
Green tea is packed with polyphenol antioxidants, including a catechin called EGCG. A catechin is an antioxidant that fights cell damage. EGCG might be the reason green tea has medicinal properties. Studies suggest EGCG has several anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetes, and antioxidant properties among other benefits. Green tea is also used as a weight-loss aid and to increase brain function.
If you’ve never heard of kefir, it’s likely you’re familiar with its cousin, yogurt. Kefir is a fermented beverage made from yeasts, milk proteins, and bacteria. Kefir is full of probiotics, which help improve the health of the digestive tract. Other research proves kefir may cause direct pathogen inhibition and increased production of healthy bacteria in the body.
As we’re based in New Orleans, how could we not list alligator on our superfoods list? Alligator is high in omega-3 fatty acids and protein. In fact, alligator has more protein per serving than beef or chicken! Alligator meat also contains potassium, iron, vitamin B-12, and no cholesterol. Even though if you’re not able to locally source alligator meat, you can order it online and experiment with all sort of unique recipes.
