Although pronounced like the verb hit, as in hit the baseball with the bat, “HIIT” is a fitness term with increasing popularity. “HIIT” means high intensity interval training. A HIIT workout consists of short intervals of heart rate raising, blood pumping moves followed by a short period of rest. The goal of a HIIT workout is to help you burn fat while still working on your muscle endurance and strength.

What Are The Benefits Of A HIIT Workout?

Burn Fat – Burning fat and not muscle is an important element of every weight loss success story. When someone is at a lower body fat percentage (BFP) and has more muscle, they’ll inevitably burn more calories while at rest. A HIIT workout will efficiently burn fat while working on your muscles’ strength and endurance.

Increase Endurance – Those who are not working out to lose weight will love how HIIT workouts keep them in shape for activities they love, such as sports and racing.

Finish Fast – Not everyone has time to get to the gym or schedule an hour with a trainer. HIIT workouts can be designed to be effective no matter your availability, even if you only have 10 minutes. You just have to increase the intensity of shorter intervals, so everyone has time in their schedules to fit in a HIIT workout!

What Equipment Is Needed For A HIIT workout?

The beauty of choosing a HIIT workout is that you can use as little or as many pieces of equipment as you want. Below are examples of equipment that can help you have a great HIIT workout:

Treadmill: You can easily do sprints on a treadmill by pressing a few buttons, and as you improve, you can vary your speeds and incline.

Jump rope: If you remember jumping rope from your days in elementary school as a fun activity, you may not realize that this is a hardcore workout. Jumping intervals are a great HIIT workout you can do outdoors, in your basement, or wherever you have the room. It’s inexpensive and efficient!

Nothing: No equipment? No problem! Your body weight is more than enough to get a great HIIT workout in. You can do high knees, burpees, arm circles, bicycles, and so much more. If it gets your heart rate up and you give it your all, it will probably work.

How Long Are Intervals In A HIIT Workout?

HIIT workout intervals can vary, but an easy way to keep track of them is keeping a consistent ratio of work to rest. You can simply do 1:1 where you have equal intervals of work and rest. For example, 30 seconds of sprinting, 30 seconds of rest. You can increase your intervals as high as 1:3 or 1:4, but no matter what relationship you choose, you want to give it your all during periods of work. You can choose how many rounds you want to do, but a good range is about 8 to 15. Any amount you can do should be a great workout if you work hard enough!
